KEEPING KIDS SAFE IN THE KITCHEN Top tips for kitchen kids

The MasterChef phenomenon has seen a nation of Aussie kids get busy in the kitchen and with foods traditionally associated with Christmas in their sites, one of the country's top young chefs is heeding a safety warning for all budding young Luke Mangans and Julie Goodwins.

The kitchen can be a recipe for disaster and children should be supervised at all times. Hot pans, sharp knives, electricity and water…. these can all spell trouble for a child not wary of the risks involved.

Having your children help cook will teach them valuable life skill of cooking, nutrition and it'll also be a great way to bond the family together.

Below are just a few recommendations.

 

TOP COOKING TIPS 4 KIDS WHO COOK 1. Always wash your hands before you cook.
2. Always use your apron and chef hat when you're cooking!
3. If you are cooking from a recipe, read the recipe in full first so that you know what the steps are.
4. Pre-prepare as much as possible so that you have ingredients ready when you need them.
5. Always ask for an adults help if you want to use or turn on the oven.
6. Never leave a stove or oven on when you're not cooking.
7. Always get an adult to help you if you need to take cooking or baking out of an oven.
8. Be very careful when handling sharp objects, especially when have greasy hands.
9. Make sure you lick any chocolate out of the bowl before you put it in for washing.
10. Then, wash up everything when you have finished.

 

TOP COOKING TIPS 4 PARENTS WHEN KIDS COOK 1. Discuss safety in the kitchen with the kids especially when using the oven, knives, peelers, graters etc.
2. Teach kids to clean up after themselves after they cook.
3. If they have not cooked before, be patient and let the kids experiment, not everyone gets it right the first time.
4. Teach kids to always wash fruit and vegetables before use.
5. Remember you are teaching them life skills, cooking is a skill and one of the most valuable life lessons you can teach them.

Kid-safe silicone has been used as the core ingredient for many of the utensils in the Junior Masterchef range. Silicone baking dishes for example can be heated to high oven temperatures but remains cool to warm on touch, making them safer than usual. Other utensils and cookware such as rolling pins and wooden spoons have been replicated from those an adult Masterchef would use in a professional kitchen.

Each kit contains real cooking products as well as four recipe cards. All products are to be used under adult supervision and the Junior Masterchef apron and chefs hat are sold separately.
